Project Summary:
This project is the construction of a new interstate interchange on the south side of Brookings. This interchange will make traveling south out of Brookings much quicker and less congested.Location: Intersection on I-29 & 20th St South in Brookings

The project is anticipated to be completed during the summer of 2023.

Project Updates:
Completed Work: The contractor is working on grading operations including the remaining ramps and 20th Avenue. Installed Curb and Gutter, fillets, curb ramps, sidewalk, at the 22nd Ave intersection. Begun installed traffic signals at the 22nd Ave intersection. The contractor scarified and recompacted the bridge berms and Granular Bridge End Backfill material
Anticipated Work to be completed in November: The contractor will install temporary pavement markings at the 22nd Ave intersection. Bowes will complete fine grading of the 20th Street mainline. Will get the signals up at the 22nd Avenue intersection. The Contractor will complete the concrete on the shared use path. The contractor will install base course pads on I-29 where the guardrail will be installed. Asphalt shoulder on I-29 will be installed.

November 7, 2022 The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) says that the two-way traffic zone currently in place on Interstate 29 near Brookings will come to an end on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022. Traffic will return to utilizing both lanes northbound and southbound on I-29.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) says that the contractors for the 20th Street Interchange project and the Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) watermain utility project continue to make progress on the improvements at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and 20th Street South.
