Interstate 229 Exit 4 - Cliff Ave Reconstruction



Project Summary:

Years Two and Three: The project includes the reconstruction of exit 4 (Cliff Avenue) with added lighting, signals, and mainline Interstate work. The Interchange will be reconstructed as a Single Point Urban Interchange. This project includes two structure replacements. 41st Street will be realigned to intersect with the Lincoln High School entrance. Traffic signals will be added to the intersection of Cliff Avenue & 38th Street. Pedestrian mobility will be improved with a new trail, sidewalk, and access tunnels. The southbound I-229 lanes and structure will be constructed in 2025 and the northbound I-229 lanes and structure will be constructed in 2026.

Year One: This project includes the modification of the median crossovers with a temporary structure in preparation for the 2025 interchange reconstruction. This project also includes the temporary widening of Interstate 229 northbound.

Project Updates:

Jan. 27, 2025:

Beginning the week of Monday, Feb. 3, 2025,  Xcel Energy will be conducting utility work on the project. Plans for the scheduled work can be found here

Dec. 20, 2024: 

Nov. 15, 2024 – Dec. 15, 2024, Completed Work: Deck panels and guardrail were installed on the temporary bridge. All guardrail along the I-229 northbound diversion has been installed Topsoil, seed, and the erosion control blanket have been completed.  

Anticipated work Dec. 15, 2024 – Jan. 15, 2025: Crews will install twelve new signs between exit 3 and 5. Pavement markings are the last remaining work item to be completed.

Dec. 13, 2024 - Press Release:

Beginning on Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, a lane closure is planned for the inside northbound lane of Interstate 229 near exit 4 (Cliff Avenue). Crews will be installing a guardrail near the northbound bridge. Weather dependent, the lane will be reopened later in the day on Monday, Dec. 16, 2024.

Motorists should be prepared for delays and use alternate routes during peak travel times through the I-229 and Cliff Avenue construction project. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduce their speed while traveling through the area. Traffic control measures will continue to guide motorists around all closures.
