S.D. Highway 46 Through Wagner

Project Summary:

This project will consist of grading, surfacing, curb & gutter, sidewalk, lighting, signals, sanitary sewer, and water main. Crews will be regrading S.D. Highway 46 through Wagner with a three-lane section east of Washington Avenue and a five-lane section west of Washington Avenue. New lighting and sidewalks will be added through town along with crosswalks with flashing beacons that will improve safety for pedestrians. During the project, the City of Wagner is also installing new sanitary sewer and water main to upgrade their existing systems to ensure future reliability.

Project Timeline:

Spring 2025 - Nov. 2025: From East Ave SE to the east end of Wagner City Limits

Spring 2026 - Nov. 2026: Western half of S.D. Highway 46 from Grant Ave SE to the west end of Wagner City Limits

Spring/Summer 2027: Completing the durable pavement markings on S.D. Highway 46 throughout this project

Project Updates:

July 18, 2025: 

June 15, 2025 – July 15, 2025, Completed Work: The contractor has made progress on the south side of Highway 46, while enduring intermittent rains. Key accomplishments include: 

Installation of 1,550 feet of storm sewer concrete pipe with inlet collection boxes. 

Preparation of a stable road base by removing unsuitable material and compacting the subgrade. 

Concrete paving, through Haar Ave. eastbound driving lane and center panel. 

Installation of sidewalk and colored concrete boulevard from Ruthie’s to Titan Machinery. 

Anticipated work July 15, 2025 – Aug. 15, 2025: In the coming month, the contractor will continue installing infrastructure improvements by staging out additional pipe, grading, and paving operations. Work will progress from east to west on the south side of Highway 46 including: 

Storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water service installation through Sheridan Avenue. 

Continued paving operations extending to the Front Avenue. 

Sidewalk installation continues to follow roadway improvements.
