U.S. Highway 18 Bridge Repair Near Winner

July 22, 2025: 

June 15, 2025 – July 15, 2025, Completed Work: The contractor completed the westbound bridge deck overlays for the three structures west of Winner over Dog Ear Creek, Big Hollow Creek and Cottonwood Creek. New concrete end blocks were formed and poured back at Big Hollow Creek. The contractor began removal of asphalt concrete shoulders to prepare for new guardrail. 

Anticipated work July 15, 2025 – Aug. 15, 2025: It is anticipated that within the next month, the contractor will pave asphalt concrete shoulders and guardrail widenings at Cottonwood Creek and Big Hollow Creek. New Guardrail will be installed at Big Hollow Creek. Approach slab work will begin, and concrete paving will take place off the east end of Dog Ear Creek bridge. Traffic will be switched to the westbound lane at Big Hollow Creek and Cottonwood Creek. Milling will begin for the low slump dense concrete overlays for the eastbound lanes.

May 20, 2025 - Press Release: 

Beginning Tuesday, May 27, 2025, work is scheduled to begin on several bridges near Winner. The repair areas will be the following bridges:

•    Bridge over Cottonwood Creek; located seven miles west of Winner on U.S. Highway 18;
•    Bridge over Big Hollow Creek; located three miles west of Winner on Highway 18;
•    Bridge over Dog Ear Creek; located on the western edge of Winner on Highway 18;
•    Bridge over the West Branch of Thunder Creek; located one and one-half miles southeast of Winner on Highway 18;
•    Bridge over Thunder Creek; located three and one-half miles southeast of Winner on Highway 18; and
•    Bridge over Moccasin Creek; located on S.D. Highway 49 near Hamill.

Work at each location will consist of concrete removal and repair of the existing bridge decks followed by a low slump dense concrete overlay. The bridge over Dog Ear Creek will also consist of new approach slabs and concrete paving off the east end of the bridge. Work will be done in phases with one lane of the bridges being worked on at a time while the other lane remains open to traffic. Traffic at each location will be controlled by temporary traffic signals or stop signs. An 18-foot width restriction will be enforced on all bridges located on Highway 18 and an 11-foot width restriction will be enforced on the bridge over Moccasin Creek (Highway 49 near Hamill). 

Traffic control is scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the bridge over Cottonwood Creek and the bridge over Big Hollow Creek. On Thursday, May 29, 2025, traffic control will also be installed at the bridge over Dog Ear Creek.
