YANKTON, S.D. – Beginning on Monday, April 21, 2025, work is scheduled to begin on the U.S. Highway 81 surfacing project between the City of Yankton and S.D. Highway 46. This project includes resurfacing the asphalt shoulders and the four-lane divided roadway north of Yankton.

Work on the project will include concrete surfacing of the newly constructed four-lane divided roadway from 306th Street to 302nd Street, resurfacing the asphalt shoulders adjacent to the existing concrete pavement from S.D. Highway 50 to 306th Street and from 300th Street to Highway 46. The project also includes guardrail widening at the James River Bridge.

Phase one of the concrete surfacing is set to begin on Monday, April 28, 2025. Two-way traffic will be placed in the northbound lanes for the first phase of the concrete surfacing and onto the newly paved southbound lanes for the second phase. Traffic will be moved through the asphalt shoulder resurfacing project using a pilot car, flaggers, and lane closures. Motorists can expect delays during these times.

The contractor for the $11.2 million project is Michels Road and Stone Inc. of Brownsville, WI. The overall project completion date is November, 2025.
